On April 22, 2011, Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin signed the signed the National Popular Vote bill into law, making Vermont the 8th state to enact the bill.
On April 15, 2011, the Vermont House of Representatives passed the National Popular Vote bill (S31) by a 84–51 margin. On February 23, 2011, the Vermont Senate passed the National Popular Vote bill by a 20–10 margin.
